rhegolith
participatory sound art
Rhegolith is the collaborative practice of audio-visual artists David Bewick and Adam Cain, working across experimental sound, moving image, generative technologies and site-responsive material. Bewick’s background in exploration geology and documentary filmmaking informs his exploration of human, machinic and geological timescales, while Cain’s practice investigates memory, perception, impermanence and the intersections between human experience and generative systems.
Taking its name from a merging of regolith, the loose ground covering solid bedrock, and Rheged, the ancient kingdom of the “Old North,” Rhegolith occupies a boundary zone of friction and experimentation. Bringing digital and analogue, mechanic and human, inert and living into shared space, the duo embraces uncertainty and transformation, allowing process and place to shape an unknowable result.
Workshop & AV Installation
Adam and David will be hosting a participatory field recording and sound art workshop. The workshop will introduce audio recording techniques and equipment they used in their collective creative practice - Rhegolith. No specialist knowledge of field recording is required, in fact participants will be encouraged to use simple techniques and equipment such as their own mobile phones as a medium to explore the landscape around the festival site, quietly listen to subtle interactions and reflect on the themes of the festival.
Audio and visual material captured during the workshop will be used in an immersive AV performance later that day that will run throughout the remainder of the festival, evolving and shifting with the energy of the weekend. Participants will also be given an opportunity to see the inner workings of the systems that will drive this performance.
