avant garde folk. psychedlic experimental

Spirited Followers are a multicultural experimental folk ensemble based in Cardiff, Wales, blending Appalachian traditions, Indian classical, Greek music, post-rock, and the avant-garde into an immersive acoustic-electronic soundscape. Rich in texture and curiosity, their unusual instrumentation pairs harmonium, Appalachian dulcimer, bouzouki, and cello with synths, drums, and crushed tape transmissions - flowing seamlessly between composed melodies and open, textural improvisation.

At The Sondering they will be performing from their debut album ‘I Am Yours’, released in Septemeber 2026. The album borrows lyrics from traditional Appalachian Christian hymns and folk songs about death. Rather than treating mortality as something bleak or overly glorified, I Am Yours explores death through the lens of acceptance, resilience, and peaceful reunion:

"We were fascinated by how these traditional songs view death not with dread, but as a peaceful acceptance—a release from life’s trials and a celebration of those who have moved on. They speak to having the strength to endure hardship, while embracing mortality when it arrives. Often, the music itself is joyful and celebratory, creating a powerful juxtaposition against traditionally heavy topics that we really wanted to explore."

By pairing ancient song traditions with boundary-pushing modern folk arrangements, Spirited Followers test the limits of the genre while preserving its deep emotional resonance. Previous highlights include appearances at Green Man Festival and FOCUS Wales, cementing their reputation as one of the most distinctive acts on the UK experimental folk scene.
